Sailboats on a foggy morning in Friday Harbor. The island’s pastoral coastline. Here, seafood is the unquestionable culinary specialty; you can’t go wrong with fish and chips.

The San Juan Islands are bounded by the Salish Sea, one of the most varied ecosystems in the Pacific Northwest, and home to myriad species of marine invertebrates, mammals, birds, and fish. The Cascade Mountains and ocean tides protect the San Juan Islands from northerly winds, exonerating the picturesque town of Friday Harbor from typical North American climates. Sleepy and secluded Friday Harbor is a tiny coastal village with immense character and history—the perfect home base for whale watching, communing with nature, and enjoying mouthwatering Pacific Northwest cuisine.

when to visit
& top tips

When to Visit: If you want to see the whales, peak season is typically considered mid-May through mid-September; however, there are resident orca populations year round, and humpback and minke populations spike in the spring and fall.

How to Get There: To reach Friday Harbor from Seattle, drive two hours north to Anacortes, then take a scenic ride on the Washington State Ferry to San Juan Island. Your Pacific Northwest paradise awaits.

arts on the island

Year round, you will find great opportunities to appreciate local art and artists. Downtown Friday Harbor hosts First Friday Art Walks all year, while sunnier months bring big events such as the Spring Awakening Arts Festival (May), San Juan Island Artists’ Studio Tour (June), and San Juan Summer Arts Fest (August).

For a home base, consider the eco-friendly five-star Island Inn at 123 West—right in the heart of the action, with floor-to-ceiling harbor views in many of its guest quarters. Reserve a spacious penthouse and relish island mornings with a steam shower, fluffy robe, and heated bathroom floors. There are plenty of places within walking distance to grab a tasty bite. For a meal and views, try Downriggers; its seafood menu includes Dungeness crab tots, albacore poke, salmon Reuben, and corn crusted halibut salad.

For scheduled activities, reserve a spot on a conservation-minded Western Prince Whale Watching Tour, which departs daily from Friday Harbor; naturalists lead wildlife tours with great respect and passion for the San Juan ecosystem. Likely sightings (season-dependent) include orcas, humpback and gray whales, harbor and elephant seals, porpoises, bald eagles, and sea lions.

On land, learn more about the endangered southern resident orcas with a tour of The Whale Museum, where you’ll learn about the “Killer Whales” of the Pacific Northwest. Visitors have the opportunity to adopt an orca of their choosing and support related education and research in the process. After your museum tour, grab lunch and head over to the west side of the island where you can picnic and view wildlife from the shoreline of the thirty-six-acre Lime Kiln Point State Park. Best known as “Whale Watch Park” for the multitude of whales passing by, visitors can check the reader board at the iconic Lime Kiln Lighthouse for the most recent sightings. The stately lighthouse was built in 1919 and is still in operation.

On Saturdays, amble downtown to check out the abundance of local goodies at the San Juan Island Farmers’ Market, happening every Saturday April through October (and one or two Saturdays per month throughout winter). Grab a freshly baked croissant and cup of hot coffee, and get to know the farmers, chefs, and makers of San Juan Island as the sounds of sea shanties emanate from the roving musicians.
